Chemical properties
Ru-97 is highly regarded in nuclear medicine as a promising diagnostic agent for SPECT imaging. Ruthenium exhibits some of the most complex aqueous chemistry among the transition metals due to its vast range of accessible oxidation states and its high propensity for forming varied coordination geometries. Within our process we should expect Ru in III oxidation state in different anion complexes: RuIIICl6 3-, [RuCl4(H2O)2]−
Different complexes of Ru-97 have been used in the past REF although a lot of work remains to be done.
Nuclear properties
Ru-97 decays by electron capture with a half-life of 2.83(23)d to the long-lived Tc-97(T1/2= 4.21E6 y).
It emits gamma-rays at 215.70(4) keV (86.17%) and 324.49(4) keV making it SPECT-imageable with high-energy collimators.
It also emits ~8.7 Auger electrons per decay with energy ranging from 30eV to 18 keV REF
Production
Ru-97 is produced at GIP ARRONAX by alpha irradiation on natural molybdenum targets. An alpha beam of 28 MeV is used on natMo target with 99.9% purity.
Chemical separation is performed using 3-step purification process involving ion exchange chromatography, and the final product is recovered in 1 N HCl.
Distribution
Production and radiochemical separations are performed at the GIP ARRONAX (Nantes, France). Activity will be shipped from there to the users in the form of an aqueous solution.
